If there’s one play that brings me back to my earliest memory of contracting an infectious disease, it’s The Wizard of Oz. When I was 8 years old, I was cast as Dorothy in the second-grade production at Bethesda Elementary School. However, my much-anticipated theatrical debut never took place; I came down with a case of the chicken pox that required me to go into quarantine.
Besides being a great writer - you are also a great mother. I love how you deal with your children - you are open - honest - real while also providing great structure and activities to support their growth. You allow them to see your vulnerability so they too can learn to deal with their own emotions and in this case disappointments. Bravo Mama - you are the true Wizard and star of your own play!!!!!
Thank you, Carol! I’d sure like to think that my kids agree with your assessment! I was tickled when my youngest daughter announced last week that she’d like next summer to be like last summer, when she didn’t attend camp and yours truly played camp counselor (as far as I was concerned my ratings weren’t too hot, especially considering we had just moved, and I was dealing with rampant sciatica, another story). In any case, I was glad to hear from my daughter that she remembers it as, dare I say, fun. Revisionist history at its best! Like most parents I know, I do my best in partnership with so many awesome institutions: schools, camps, extracurricular programs. I am so grateful to the greater village that helps me out, and, of course, to you and others for ongoing support!
